York is a large walled city in North Yorkshire with a population of nearly 200,000 people in total. The city is famed for its rich history and lies on the Ouse and Foss rivers.

York is nearly 2,000 years old and was founded by Romans in AD 71 as on of Roman Britain's capitals. In 1996 the City of York was changed to include several areas outside the city walls which increased the overall population.

There are several important and popular landmarks and attractions in York that make it a key tourist destination. One of these is York Minster, one of the biggest Gothic Cathedral in Europe. The cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of York and has the largest amount of medieval stained glass in the world.

The Yorkshire Museum is the home of the Cawood Sword (a superb Viking sword) and is divided into four main areas and collections for astronomy, geology, biology and archaeology. The museum was established in 1830 and is managed by the York Museums Trust.

The York National Railway Museum is part of the British National Museum of Science and Industry. The Museum demonstrates the history of rail transport in England and shows how it impacted society. The museum is very popular and has won several accolades including, in 2001, the prestigious European Museum of the Year.

Students in York can study at the University of York with over 13,000 currently attending. Many subjects are taught at the university with science, technology and art some popular choices. The main university building is located on the edge of the City of York in Heslington.

By road, the A19 road connects to nearby Tyneside and Doncaster with the M1 motorway just 10 miles outside the main city.

York Railway Station runs services on the East Coast Main Line to Edinburgh, Newcastle and a direct route to London that takes around two hours.
