Yarm, with a
population of under 9,000 people, is a small town in
Stockton-on-Tees. Yarm is located in North East England (part of the
ceremonial county of North Yorkshire) near to the River Tess.
One of Yarm's oldest features in the stone bridge that was built by
Bishop Skerlaw in the late 13th century. Also, historically, the
meeting that allowed work to start on the nearby Stockton and
Yarm has three local councillors (based in the ward of Stockton) and
the town's council is responsible for many aspects of Yarm's
administration including the cemetery and allotment plots.
In addition to the River Tees, the River Leven also flows through
the east of the city. In previous years many vessels used the river
for travelling to Yarm from the North Sea.
The town itself is split in to five estate areas; Layfield Farm,
Willey Flatts, Levendale, The Kebbell and Leven Park. The main Town
Hall (built in the early 18th century) is located on the main high
street in Yarm.
The high street has a superb reputation and, in 2007, was voted the
best high street in Britain in a BBC poll. The high street has
extensive cobbled pavements and parking areas and several fine
examples of Georgian architecture.
Every October a fair is held in Yarm high street. Originally a
commercial fair, these days it mainly operates as a fun fair which
is attending by many people.
