Wolverhampton is a large city in the West Midlands with a population approaching a quarter of a million people. The wider urban area of Wolverhampton is the 13th largest city in the country and is a metropolitan borough of the West Midlands.

Historically, Wolverhampton prospered as a market town and wool trading town until the Industrial Revolution changed the city to a mining and production based community.

Some of the areas Wolverhampton profited in was the limestone, iron and coal industries in addition to the production of cars, motorcycles and steel. In fact, the first vehicle to pass the 200mph speed record was built in the city.

The city gained the nickname the "Black Country" in the 19th century due the heavy industrial pollution that covered much of the south east areas of the city in black soot.

In the mid 19th century a statue was put up to commemorate Price Albert. Queen Victoria was delighted at the statue and knighted John Morris, the mayor.

Wolverhampton is also famous for having the first ever automated set of traffic lights in the late 1920's. Located at Prices Square, there is still traditional striped poles to acknowledge this.

Wolverhampton has superb traffic links and is acclaimed for its excellent public transport systems. Because of the well run public transport in the city, car ownership is actually lower than the national average.

There are several motorways in close proximity to Wolverhampton including the M6 that links to London, Liverpool Manchester and Scotland. The M54 road connects Wolverhampton with Wales and, along the way, Telford and Shrewsbury.

By rail, the main Wolverhampton Railway Station operates services on the West Coast Main Line to Manchester, London and nearby Birmingham. A new railway service, due to launch later in 2008 will operate services to Shropshire and Marylebone Railway Stations.

Wolverhampton does have a small airport but the closest major airport is the Birmingham International Airport (just over 20 miles away) which operates domestic and European flights to many locations.
