Winchester is a large historic city in Hampshire. The city, with a population of over 40,000 people is on the south of England near Southampton and, in the the 10th and 11th centuries, was famously the capital of England.

The city has the picturesque River Itchen flowing through parts of it and is near the South Downs. The most famous, and dominating landmark in Winchester is the cathedral. The cathedral is famous for being the second longest cathedral in the whole of Europe.

Winchester Cathedral was built in the late 11th century and has many excellent examples of architecture that spans the 12th to 16th centuries. The cathedral is also famous for being the starting point for the Pilgrim's Way when they travelled to Canterbury. The cathedral has also home to several Bishops of Winchester over the years.

The nearby Cathedral Close is renowned for its historic buildings that date back the the days when the cathedral doubled as a priory in the 13th to 15th centuries. The Wolvesey Castle was, during the 11th century, the Normal Bishop's Palace and during the 16th century the castle entertained guests like King Phillip II of Spain and Queen Mary Tudor.

Another famous landmark in Winchester is Winchester Castle. The castle is famous for its spectacular Great Hall that contained King Arthur's Round Table from the mid 15th century. The table was later painted for King Henry VIII in the 16th century and contains the names of the Knights of the Round Table.

The castle also contains the King's House and Peninsular Barracks where several museums are housed. Inside, the Price Charles Wedding gates are located near to the Round Table.

Other important buildings of a historical nature in Winchester include the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester City Mill and the Guildhall that dates back to the late 19th century.

Winchester has excellent train links and is on the mainline of the London Waterloo to Weymouth line. Other key stops on the Winchester line include nearby Southampton, Portsmouth and Brighton.
