Waterford is a large city in Ireland with a population of around 50,000 people. Originally founded by Vikings over 1,000 years ago, Waterford is Irelands oldest city and a key city for the southern region of Ireland.

Waterford's most famous landmark is Reginald's Tower, an old civic building in the city. Some of the population of Waterford is made up from around 3,000 people who live in the outer city suburbs of the County Kilkenny area.

Waterford have had many industries over the years with glass making one of the best well known. Waterford Crystal is famous throughout the world and the industry has operated in the city since the late 18th century.

Waterford lies on the River Suir which has formed part of Waterford's history of being a major Irish port. Similarly, shipbuilding has also contributed to the city's history over the years with a large fleet of iron steamers occupying the area in the middle of the 19th century.

Originally a Viking town, Waterford still has some parts of the city's original fortifications with narrow streets and original medieval architecture.

In recent times the city centre has seen many new restaurants opened in the area amongst the old buildings. The John Roberts Square area is now pedestrianised and forms the basis of the main retail centre of the city.

Waterford's Quay area is very highly regarded and stretches from the Adelphi Quay to the Grattan Quay. The Quay are is a key commercial district of the city and is very popular amongst locals.

Culture fans can enjoy several museums, galleries and theatres including the Waterford Museum of Treasures, the Waterford Municipal Art Gallery, the Dyehouse Gallery, the Theatre Royal, the Red Kettle Theatre and the Spraoi Theatre.

By road, the N9 connects Waterford to Dublin. The N24 and N25 roads also connect the city to Limerick and Cork. The main train station in Waterford is Plunkett Station and has been opened for nearly 150 years.
