Wandsworth Local Business Directory

Wandsworth is a small town in west London on the bank of the famous River Thames. The town makes up the larger London Borough of Wandsworth with several other towns (including Clapham Junction, Tooting and Battersea) which, in total, has a population of around 280,000.

The name "Wandsworth" originated from the River Wandle. The river connects to the River Thames and runs alongside the town. In 1965 the two Metropolitan Boroughs of Battersea and Wandsworth joined together to form the London Borough of Wandsworth.

The Battersea Power Station (which is technically in Clapham) is one of the most famous buildings in the area. In return, the Clapham Junction railway station is actually located in the town of Battersea.

Several new developments and buildings have been built in Wandsworth including the prestigious Chelsea Bridge Wharf and the Peace Pagoda, both of which are close to the River Thames.

Near East Hill is an area often referred to as the "Toast Rack" and is made up of some of the most expensive houses in London. Nearby, the Bellevue Road boutiques and restaurants make the area a very desirable place to live.

The Royal Victoria Patriotic Building is one of the most striking buildings in the town and contains a popular restaurant and exclusive flats.

The main high street of Wandsworth is often very busy and suffers from traffic congestion. The high street has many restaurants, a cinema and the popular Southside Shopping Centre. The shopping centre contains many chain stores including Primark, Gap, Waitrose, HMV and JD Sports. There is also a large gym in the centre.

The Wandsworth Town Railway Station operates in Travelcard Zone 2 and connects to Putney and Clapham Junction with trains operated by South West Trains.

The other station in the town, Wandsworth Common Railway Station is in Travelcard Zone 3 and operates several different routes to destinations like London Bridge, London Victoria, Epsom, West Croydon and Sutton.
