Swansea is a large Welsh city in the county of Glamorgan with a population of around 170,000 people. The city is located on the coast of South Wales and is the second biggest Welsh city after Cardiff.

Swansea was, historically, a heavy industrial city that grew rapidly in the 18th and 19th centuries. Swansea attained its city status in 1969 to commemorate Prince Charles's title of the Price of Wales.

During the Second World War, Swansea was targeted by heavy bombing and the city centre was severely damaged. Many important buildings in the city were also destroyed. Swansea city still has the ruins of the castle in place.

Other popular landmarks and locations in Swansea include the Glynn Vivian Art Galley, the Dylan Thomas Centre, The Environmental Centre, the Market (the largest covered market in Wales) and the Swansea Museum.

Sport has always been a popular past-time in Swansea. Glamorgan County Cricket Club play their home games at St Helen's. Swansea Rugby Club also share the stadium for their home games.

The main city centre in Swansea has been undergoing redevelopment that is due to be complete in 2015. A new leisure centre and museum are two of the early developments as well as professional street art along the Castle Street development.

More green areas and being added as part of the development scheme. The Grand Theatre Square, Quadrant Square areas, Lower Oxford Street arcades and Oxford Street car park are also on the horizon to be redeveloped.

Students can study at the Swansea University with over 15,000 currently attending. One of the campuses at Singleton Park overlooks the Swansea Bay area and the university is highly acclaimed for its engineering department.

The closest motorway to Swansea is the M4 while the A48 road passes through the city and connects Swansea with Morriston and Llansamlet.

Several park-and-ride services are available from carp parks in Fabian Way and Landore with the volume of services dependant on the time of year. Four railway stations are in the main county area with one located in Swansea city.
