St Albans Local Business Directory

St Albans is a large town in Hertfordshire with a population of over 60,000 people. The town is close to London and is in commutable distance to the city.

The town still hosts a regular street market in St Peter's Street and Market Place twice a week. A popular farmers market (normally held monthly) is also held in the town.

St Albans is famous for claiming to have more pubs per square mile that any other place in England (although several other towns and cities dispute this). The town also claims to have the oldest pub in England, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks.

One of the most famous landmarks in the town is St Albans Cathedral. The Cathedral is an Anglican Church and, at nearly 350 feet, has the longest nave of all the cathedrals in England.

The cathedral building dates back to Norman times but was only given its status as a cathedral in 1877. The grounds hold a Henry Moore sculpture, Single Standing Figure that dates back to the early 1980's.

The main centre can suffer from some traffic congestion but the council are attempting to improve road layouts and routes in addition to offering better public transport options to help alleviate this.

St Albans does not have a university but does have several popular schools including the Franchise Bacon School, Beaumont School, Loreto College, Sandringham School, St Albans School and St Columba's College.

Transport to St Albans is varied and extensive. By rail, there are two main railway stations in the town. The City Station is in the city centre and operates trains to London, Luton Airport, London Gatwick Airport, Brighton and Wimbledon.

The other station is Abbey Station (approximately three quarters of a mile outside the city) which operates a sole train service to Watford Junction in Hertfordshire.

There is no airport in St Albans but two major international airports, London Luton Airport and London Heathrow Airport are both easy accessible via rail links or road.
