Southampton is a
large city on the English south coast with a population on over
225,000 people. The city is the largest south coast city and has an
important and busy port. Situated close to the New Forest,
Southampton is popular with commuters due to its excellent transport
links.
Located in the county of Hampshire, Southampton has several rivers
flowing through it including The River Itchen and River Test that
join at the north part of the city and the River Hamble that runs
through the south of the city.
Over 20,000 students study at the University of Southampton. The
university is highly regarded for its engineering faculty and is one
of the largest research university for mathematics and physical
sciences. The university has several campuses spread out across the
city.
Famously, Southampton was the home of the RMS Titanic and also the
World War II Spitfire aeroplane. Many large cruise liners dock at
Southampton and start their journey from the city port.
The main shopping centre in Southampton is the recently opened West
Quay Shopping Centre. The retail park opened in 2000 and is one of
the largest retail spaces in England. There are plans in place to
add more leisure facilities and possibly a large casino in the
future.
Other areas for shopping include the Bargate Centre which has more
specialist shops and smaller retailers. Also, the Marlands Shopping
Centre has a large, flagship Matalan store and a popular information
desk that is helpful to visitors.
The largest sporting team in the city is Southampton Football Club.
The team (nickname "The Saints") play their home games at the St
Mary's Stadium (after many years playing at the Dell Stadium) and
play in the Football League Championship.
Other sporting teams in the area include Hampshire County Cricket
Club (who play at the Rose Bowl) and several yachting teams. Many of
the yachting teams enter the Whitbread Around The World Yacht Race
that was, until recently, based in Southampton.
Transport to Southampton is quite extensive with the M27 motorway on
the outskirts of the city. There M3 motorway connects to London and
beyond. There are two main railway stations in the city, Southampton
Central and Southampton Airport Parkway.
The closest airport is Southampton Airport that operates regional
flights around the United Kingdom and several European destinations.
The Southampton Airport Parkway station makes commuting to the
airport very easy by rail.
