Sligo Local Business Directory

Sligo is a town in the Republic of Ireland and it is the county town of County Sligo. With a population of just under 20,000 people, Sligo is quite a small town in terms of population but is still the second largest urban area in Connacht.

Sligo has an exciting history and gets its name from the plentiful shellfish that has been found in the town for many years. The Garavogue river (originally called the Sligeach) flows through the town.

Throughout the middle of the 19th century, Sligo saw a rise in people emigrating through the port. Over 30,000 people in total emigrated and there is now a memorial sculpture on site to commemorate this.

One of the oldest buildings in Sligo is the Sligo Abbey Dominican Friary. Built during medieval times, the building was destroyed by fire in the 15th century and rebuilt. Since the rebuilding, the foundations have stood the test of time and can still be seen in the town.

The most famous former resident of Sligo is W. B. Yeats who based many of his works around the town. Yeats spent most of his life in the town and is renowned for his "The Lake Isle of Innisfree" poem from the late 19th century.

Sligo is set amongst two different mountain ranges, the Ox Mountains and the Dartry Mountains which W. B. Yeats often wrote about.

In recent years Sligo town has undergone some development with two shopping centres (Quayside and Johnston's) opening in the last couple of years. Several members of the popular band Westlife were born or now live in Sligo.

Transport in to Sligo is mainly via the N4 Dublin road. The road is made up of dual-carriageways and some stretches of motorway.

By rail, the Sligo Railway Station (now known as Mac Diarmada Station) provides services to Dublin with many smaller stops along the way making Sligo very accessible to nearby towns.
