Sheffield is a large metropolitan borough city in South Yorkshire with a population over well over half a million people. When the Sheffield Urban Area is included the population rises to almost 650,000 people.

Sheffield lies on the River Sheaf (which is where the city's name comes from) and runs throughout the city itself. Along with eight other English cities, Sheffield is known as one of the English Core Cities Group members.

Economically and historically, Sheffield is best known for its strong steel industry especially during the 19th century. Stainless steel and crucible steel were both developed in Sheffield and this blossomed even more during the Industrial Revolution.

Sheffield city is developing quickly with redevelopment plans in place throughout several areas. Places the like Millennium Galleries, the Peace gardens and the Winter Gardens have already seen extensive renovations with superb results.

Shopping in Sheffield is varied and widespread with several shopping centres, department stores and shopping streets.

Several big brand stores like Marks and Spencer, Debenhams, John Lewis and Woolworths have large stores in the city. Sheffield also has a market (Castle Market) which is above the castle remains.

Sheffield have two famous football teams, Sheffield United, who play at Bramall Lane, and Sheffield Wednesday, who play at the Hillsborough Stadium. Sheffield is famously the home to the world's first ever football club, Sheffield FC formed in 1857.

By road, the M1 and M18 motorways are both in easy travelling distance from the city and give road links to London and Leeds. By rail, the Midland Main Line Railway offers direct links to Derby, London and Leicester. Services to Scotland are also available.

Sheffield city centre does not have an airport but is close to the Doncaster Sheffield Airport which is just 20 miles outside the city.

The airport mainly operates budget airline flights and approximately
1 million people use the airport every year.
