Scarborough Local Business Directory

Scarborough is a large town on the North Yorkshire coast with a population of over 50,000 people. Scarborough is split between an old town area near the harbour and the modern town area by the limestone cliffs.

Scarborough is generally regarded to be the largest holiday resort along the North Yorkshire coastline and has a varied and vibrant economy covering everything from digital and high-tech creative industries to the fishing industry.

The South Bay area of Scarborough has many entertainment and arcade areas making it popular for tourists and locals with a modern nightlife and shopping scene.

The harbour area has been redeveloped extensively in recent years to make it more pedestrian friendly and accessible. There is even an old miniature railway that runs from the Peasholm park to the local Sea Life Centre on the North Bay Railway.

One of the town's most famous landmarks, Scarborough Castle, overlooks the North and South bays. The castle was built in the late 12th century and is located on a rocky peninsula the overlooks the town. The keep, built by Henry II, is still visible from both bays.

Another popular landmark is the Star Disk in South Bay. The disk measures over 25m across and has many underground lights that represent the brightest stars in the sky.

The York to Scarborough railway line runs past a popular ornamental lake known as the Mere that used to be host to rowing boats and canoes. These days the lake is more focused on nature but this has not dampened it's popularity.

Transport links to Scarborough are very good due to it being a popular tourist destination. The Scarborough Railway Station operates services from Hull (in the Yorkshire Coast line) and York (on the North TransPennine line).
