Salisbury, in Wiltshire, is a cathedral city with a population of around 45,000 people. The city is twinned with French town Saintes and German town Xanten and is part of the wider Salisbury District.

Five major rivers pass through Salisbury inlcuding the Ebble, Avon, Bourne, Nadder and Wylye. The city layout was originally designed around a grid layout and was surrounded by a city was in the 1300's.

Salisbury is famous for its cathedral, the first incarnation being built in the late 11th century. The second version was built in Salisbury in 1220 and took nearly 40 years to complete. The cathedral is high regarded for its architecture and the spire, built later, is the tallest in the United Kingdom.

Salisbury Cathedral is famous for having one of the oldest surviving mechanical clocks in the country that dates back to the late 14th century. The cathedral is also home to an extensive library that houses one of the best surviving copies of the Magna Carta in existence.

Today, Salisbury still has a regular market held twice weekly. Other popular places and landmarks in and around Salisbury include the Stonehenge prehistoric circle of stones which is only around 10 miles away with visitors helping to contribute to the city's economy.

The main shopping areas in Salisbury include The Old George Mall and the Maltings. The Winchester Street area also has several popular shops and is a popular retail area in the city.

Other popular leisure activities and places to visit include the Bishop's Walk which is famous for its stunning views. The city also has a leisure centre and swimming pool (The Five Rivers Centre) that was opened recently.

Cultural events and plays can be found at the Playhouse theatre. The City Hall also serves as an entertainment scene with many musicals, comedy performances and even trade conventions held there. The Salisbury Art Centre hosts several exhibitions yearly and runs regular workshops for budding artists.

Salisbury has excellent transport links by railway due to it being located at the crossover point of the Wessex Main Line and the West of England Main Line railways.
