Salford is a
large city in Great Manchester with a population of well over 70,000
people. The city is around 8 square miles in size and is close to
the River Irwell. Salford is part of the 'metropolitan district' of
the City of Salford with two other neighbouring towns.
A popular, and famous, landmark in Salford is Salford Cathedral. Its
full name is The Cathedral Church of St. John the Evangelist and is
located inside the city. The Cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of
Salford and is a Grade II listed building.
Salford is also home to a large higher education centre, the
University of Salford. The university has over 20,000 students
attending and is often rated highly for teaching amongst United
Kingdom universities.
Many high-rise blocks were built in the 1960's and remain a
prominent feature on the city's skyline. An extensive redevelopment
plan began recently at the cost of nearly £200 million. The
development plans will see new parks, hotels, apartments and
restaurants built in the area.

the shopping centre and district.
