Salford is a large city in Great Manchester with a population of well over 70,000 people. The city is around 8 square miles in size and is close to the River Irwell. Salford is part of the 'metropolitan district' of the City of Salford with two other neighbouring towns.

A popular, and famous, landmark in Salford is Salford Cathedral. Its full name is The Cathedral Church of St. John the Evangelist and is located inside the city. The Cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Salford and is a Grade II listed building.

Salford is also home to a large higher education centre, the University of Salford. The university has over 20,000 students attending and is often rated highly for teaching amongst United Kingdom universities.

Many high-rise blocks were built in the 1960's and remain a prominent feature on the city's skyline. An extensive redevelopment plan began recently at the cost of nearly £200 million. The development plans will see new parks, hotels, apartments and restaurants built in the area.

There are several popular tourist attractions and buildings in Salford including the Bridgewater Canal, Ordsall Hall (a historic stately home) and the Lowry Centre (an art gallery and theatre that has won several awards).

Salford's most famous resident was L.S. Lowry, a famous artist best known for his paintings of Salford and mill scenes around Manchester. His paintings are recognisable by the small matchstick style figures in many of his works. Hi paintings of industrial districts have a unique style that are popular worldwide.

Salford's main shopping area is in Pendleton and is known as the Salford Shopping City. The shopping centre is nearby to the university and the main business district in the city. Much of the area has had development plans submitted in an attempt to modernise the shopping centre and district.

Transport links to Salford are very good thanks to the central location in Manchester. Inside the city the Manchester Metrolink system operates near the docks and provides services to Eccles and Langworthy.

By rail, there a several railway stations of varying sizes in Salford including Salford Central, Moorside, Clifton, Walkden, Eccles, Swinton and Patricroft. Traffic links are extensive due to the motorway links in and around Greater Manchester.
