Roscommon Local Business Directory

Roscommon is a small town of just over 4,000 in the Republic of Ireland. The town, which is the county town of County Roscommon, was originally set up around a 5th century monastery that was establish by St Coman.

Roscommon is best known for its busy market and famous hangwoman, Lady Betty. Other landmarks and famous buildings include the Dominican Friary that was setup in the middle of the 13th century by Felim O'Connor who was the King of Connacht.

Roscommon Castle was built shortly after the Dominican Friary and is another of the small town's most famous buildings. The castle was built in 1269 with the main purpose of providing a fortress to the Anglo Norman forces.

There is a popular golf course in Roscommon that was founded at the turn of the 20th century. Roscommon Golf Club is set in beautiful parklands and was recently extended to eighteen holes.

Mature beech, ash and sycamore trees are littered throughout the course and are typical of the beautiful surroundings of much of Roscommon and the other towns in County Roscommon and the province of Connacht.

The most famous figure from Roscommon's history is Wentworth Dillion, the Fourth Earl of Roscommon who was an English poet in the 17th century.

Earl Roscommon's poems were later collected together and released, along with several other British poets work at the turn of the 18th century.

Transport links to Roscommon are not extensive but the local train station, Roscommon Railway Station (which has been opened since 1860) operates services to Dublin and Westport with the Athlone and Castlerea the nearest stations.

By road, Roscommon is quite easily accessible thanks to its central location in the Republic of Ireland with many larger transport link locations in easily commutable distance.
