Preston Local Business Directory

Preston is a large city in Lancashire with a population approaching 130,000 people. Preston was only been granted city status in 2002 and lies on the River Ribble. The Ribble runs through Lancashire and North Yorkshire and also in to some parts of Wigan and Greater Manchester.

Preston is unique in the fact some of the areas and towns associated with Preston are actually part of neighbouring boroughs. This is due to the fact that part of the city centre is on the southern border with South Ribble. Some of these areas include Hutton, Bamber, Longton, Gregson Lane and Higher Walton.

St Walburge's Church is one of Preston's most famous landmarks. The church, built in 1850, was designed by Joseph Hansom. Other popular buildings and landmarks in Preston include the Harris Building, Fishergate Baptist Church and the Miller Arcade.

Preston also has several well maintained parks including Moor Park, Winckley Square, Miller Park, Avenham Park and Ribbleton Park.

There are many retail areas and centres in Preston including the impressive Fishergate Centre (which houses large TK Maxx, Debenhams, Argos and Primark stores), the Mall (currently being redeveloped) and the Miller Arcade.

The shopping area at Fishergate also has many bars and restaurants around the shopping precinct and streets. A redevelopment plan for the area, known as the Tithebarn Project is also being planned.

Preston has several easily accessible motorways (including the first ever stretch of motorway in the United Kingdom). The M61 links Preston to Manchester while the M55 handles traffic to and from Blackpool.

By rail, the Preston Railway Station, is on the West Coast Main Line and runs direct services to Lancaster, Leeds, Bolton, Liverpool and Manchester. There are also regular services to London and Glasgow.
