Oxford is a large city in Oxfordshire and has a total population of nearly 150,000 people. Oxford is often referred to as the City of Dreaming Spires as a reference to the complimentary architecture used by the university buildings. The University of Oxford is famous for being the oldest university in England.

In addition to the University of Oxford the city has another popular university, Oxford Brookes University. The University achieved university status in 1991 and since then has been voted the best new university in the United Kingdom.

The suburb of Cowley, in Oxford, has an illustrious history in the car-making industry. Several classic cars by Rover, Triumph, Morris, Austin and BMW Mini have all been produced in the town.

Oxford is a very popular city to visit. Tourists can enjoy many landmarks and attractions including the Covered Market (which contains several tourist shops), Carfax Tower, Christ Church Cathedral, the Museum of Oxford and the Oxford Museum of Modern Art.

Oxford is famous for being the base of several literary names including Lewis Carrol, P.D. James, Colin Dextor, T.E. Lawrence, C.S. Lewis, Ian McEwan, Philip Pullman and J.R.R. Tolkien.

There are several cultural venues in oxford including The Oxford Playhouse on Beaumont Street, Pegasus Theatre, Burton Taylor Theatre, New Theatre as well as several cinemas including two Odeon Cinemas and the Vue Cinema.

Transport links to Oxford are very good, partly because it is only 50 miles away from London on the A40. Oxford is also close to Birmingham and the Midlands making it a popular commuting location. Local bus services (operated by Stagecoach and the Oxford Bus Company) operate local services locally and to London.

By rail, the Oxford Railway Station operates services to London Paddington, Birmingham, Banbury and Coventry. The Oxford Canal is still in operation and connects to the River Thames although these days it is mainly used by leisure boats and craft.
