Newry and Mourne Local Business Directory

 

 

 

Newry and Mourne is a district council area in Northern Ireland. The council area includes many parts of southern County Armagh and County Down. The total population of the district area is over 90,000 people while Newry (the biggest settlement in the area) has a population of around 30,000.

Several other towns make up the council area including Warrenpoint, Hilltown, Rostrever, Kilkeel and Annlong in County Down. Crossmaglen and Bessbrook are also in the area but are part of County Armagh.

The district council area of Newry and Mourne is split between five main electoral areas. Crotlieve, Newry Toen, Fews, The Mournes and Slieve Gullion make up the areas and, in the last major election, thirty members were elected from various political parties.

Crossmaglen is one of the villages in the Newry and Mourne area. The village has a small population of around 1,500 people and is South Armagh's largest village. The towns name translates to Lennon's Cross which refers to the two main roads that cross in the town square.

Another village in the district in Bessbrook. The village has around 3,000 residents and is just three miles away from Newry. The village is also close to the main Dublin to Belfast road and railway line. During the late twentieth century Bessbrook became one of the busiest heliports in Europe.

The town of Warrenpoint, in County Down, also lies in the Newry and Mourne council district. The town has a large population of over 7,000 people and is famous for the Maiden of the Mournes festival that is held there.

Rostrevor, also in County Down, falls in to the Newry and Mourne district and lies on the Carlingford Lough at the base of Slieve Martin hill. Nearly 2,500 people live in the village which has become famous in recent years for its folk music festival.

Transport links to Newry and Mourne are very good due to it's location in between Belfast and Dublin. Newry Ireland Railway Station offers a service over the border on the main Belfast to Dublin line to locals from the Newry and Mourne district.

By road the M1/A1 route, also from Belfast to Dublin, as the most popular route with an upgraded dual carriageway due to start in 2012.
