Newport Local Business Directory

Newport is a large city in Wales with a population approaching 160,000 people. Newport lies on the River Usk and is close in proximity to both Cardiff in Wales and Bristol in England. Newport is part of Gwent as a ceremonial county and the Monmouthshire historical county.

Newport Castle is one of the city's landmarks but is now in ruins. The nearby modern road and railway traffic have caused the castle to now become permanently fenced off since 2003. Unfortunately, the nearby footpath has now been closed to the public for safety reasons.

Traditionally, Newport was used as a trading centre during the Middle Ages. The locally known Newport Ship was uncovered in 2002 at the base of the River Usk while workmen were constructing the Riverfront Arts Centre.

Other notable buildings include the St Woolos Cathedral (seat of the Bishop of Monmouth) and Tredegar House which is set in a picturesque 90 acre park. There are several museums in the city including the Newport Museum and the Roman Legionary Museum.

The civil service industry is the largest current employer in Newport. There are several major employers in the area that are based at several business parks around the M4 motorway (between junctions 24 and 28). The Passport Office have their offices in Newport as do the British Red Cross.

One of the newest major buildings in Newport is the Riverfront Arts Centre on Kingsway Boulevard. Newport Rugby Club will soon play at a planned 15,000 seater stadium nearby.

These examples of Newport City Council's regeneration plans are continued in to the transport industry. The current railway stations and bus stations are due to undergo extensive redevelopment schemes in the next few years to improve transport links in Newport and to the connecting towns and villages.

By road, the M4 motorway is the most popular route in to Newport while several smaller 'A roads' link the city to several locations on the way to the Midlands. The M4 also connects Newport to nearby Monmouthshire and also Gloucestershire.

Newport does not have an airport but the nearby Cardiff International Airport can carry passengers to several international destinations on scheduled flights. Several low far and charter flights operate from Cardiff International Airport which regularly sees over 2 million passengers every year.
