Middlesbrough is
a large town with a population of over 140,000 people. Set in the
Tees Valley, Middlesbrough became a unitary authority in 1996 when
Cleveland was abolished. At the same time, Middlesbrough was
entitled the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire.
Middlesbrough is almost exclusively urbanised and is the largest
town (based on population and area) in Teesside. Despite this
urbanisation, Middlesbrough is still on the edge of the North York
Moors National Park.
To the east of Middlesbrough is Teesport which is the United
Kingdom's second largest port. The port covers 2 square kilometres
of land and sees over 6,000 ships pass through every year. A large
amount of cargo is handled by the port with an estimated yearly
amount over 50 million tonnes.
Middlesbrough has several famous landmarks including Acklam Hall,
one of the oldest buildings in the town. Several churches including
Coulby Newman, Marton, Stainton and St Mary's Roman Catholic
Cathedral are also in the area.
The Middlesbrough Institutes of Modern Art is a popular, and new,
art gallery that opened in early 2007. The gallery is famous for
housing one of the largest collections of Picasso's work in the
United Kingdom. Other artists on display in the gallery include
Damien Hirst and Andy Warhol.
Shopping in Middlesbrough is provided by several major shopping
centres. The Mall Cleveland and the Dundas Street Shopping centres
are two of the most popular but there is also the Hill Street
Shopping Centre and the Captain Cook Square that house many national
and independent retailers.
Despite the heavy urbanisation of Middlesbrough there are two
popular recreational parks. The Stewart Park and Albert Park which
have seem substantial restoration take place in recent years. The
parks landmarks, sundial and fountains have all be restored
completely or revived to their former glories.
Over 20,000 students study at the University of Teesside which has
been open since the early 1990's. The university carries a wide
range of subjects but is best known for its computer games design
and computer animation courses.
The most well known sporting team in the town is Middlesbrough F.C.
who play in the Premier League at the Riverside Stadium. The team
won their first major trophy in their history in 2004 when they beat
Bolton Wanderers in the Carling Cup final.
Transport to Middlesbrough is quite extensive. By air, the Durham
Tees Valley Airport is in close proximity while there are several
public transport options in the town itself. Multiple bus operators
server the town providing transport locally and to the Durham Tees
airport.
