Lichfield Local Business Directory

Lichfield is a small city in Staffordshire with a population of nearly 30,000 people. Lichfield is one of just seven civil parishes to be bestowed city status. The nearest large city to Lichfield is Birmingham (approximately 15 miles away).

Lichfield is famous for its three spired cathedral. The city is regarded as an ecclesiastical centre and still retains much of its original character and buildings. Despite this, the city is still being developed and a new housing area to the west of Lichfield is under construction.

Today, several industries help contribute to Lichfield's economy. Armitage Shanks and Arthur Price of England are based in Lichfield but the area is not dominated by one industry in particular.

Lichfield's most famous former resident was Samuel Johnson. Dr Johnson was a poet, biographer and lexicographer who is famous for writing the first authoritative English Dictionary during the 18th century.

Famously, the dictionary took Johnson nine years to complete (he had expected it to take three) and Dr Johnson's fame was introduced to a new generation when Robbie Coltrane portrayed him in BBC comedy series Blackadder.

There are several notable places of interest in Lichfield including the Lichfield Cathedral with it's famous three spires. The cathedral was completed in the early 14th century.

Other important landmarks and buildings include The Bishop's Palace, The Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum, the Lichfield Heritage Centre, Milley's Hospital and Market Square.

Lichfield can be reached by rail to either the Lichfield City Railway Station or the Lichfield Trent Valley Railway Station. Both operate on the London and North Western Railway line. The fastest service from Lichfield to London can be as quick as 70 minutes.
