Lewisham is a
south east London Borough that forms part of the area known as Inner
London. Lewisham is a large borough with well over 250,000
residents.
Historically, Lewisham's history can be traced back to the sixth
century. Lewisham was in fact considered part of Kent until the late
nineteenth century. Lewisham later formed part of the Metropolitan
Borough of Lewisham in the 1960's.
During World War II, Lewisham was hit bit a large bomb which caused
over 300 deaths. The main high street suffered severe damage and
took another decade to fully rebuild.
There is now a plaque outside the boroughs main shopping centre to
commemorate the event and the restoration process that the borough
completed.
Lewisham Shopping Centre is the main commercial centre in the
borough. It is famous for housing a large Sainsburys store (once
regarded as the largest European supermarket).
Since the Docklands Light Railway extension routed through Lewisham
the shopping centre has seen a 7% increase in sales. Several large
chain stores are in the centre including BHS, Boots, Marks and
Spencer, Argos, Next and WHSmith.
There are two main sixth form colleges in Lewisham. Lewisham College
has several locations in the district and Christ The King College.
Lewisham has superb transport links. The A20 road leads towards
Dover and the A21 travels to Hastings. The new Docklands Light
Raliway has now been extended to server Lewisham which has increased
transport links throughout the borough.
By rail, there are several railway stations and tube stations in
Lewisham that link the borough to all main London stations and the
outer towns.
