Leeds is a large
core city in West Yorkshire with a population approaching 750,000
people (when including the metropolitan district). Leeds is situated
on the River Aire (part of which is canalised) and runs from North
Yorkshire to the East Riding of Yorkshire.
Leeds has several prosperous industries including financial
services, banking, business services, legal services, insurance and
pension funding, commercial cleaning, properties, accountancy and
research and development.
Leeds has seen many high rise developments built in recent years
with more in the planning stage. The biggest of these proposed
developments is the Lumiere Building that will be nearly 600ft tall
when building work is complete.
Leeds is becoming very popular with tourists. In 2004 the city was
voted the "UK's Favourite City" by Conde Nast Traveller magazine.
The Good Britain Guide has also bestowed several accolades on the
city including "Visitor City of The Year" in 2005 and "Best English
City to Visit Outside London", also in 2005.
Leeds has a vivacious cultural scene with several popular
attractions in the city. Some of these include the Henry Moore
Sculpture Centre, the Royal Armouries and the West Yorkshire
Playhouse. The Harewood House is another popular attraction that won
the award of Excellence in England Awards for Tourism in 2003.
Leeds host several popular events including the Leeds German Market
(during November and December), the Leeds Christmas Lights, the Park
In The Park and Leeds Carling Weekend festival, the Leeds
International Film Festival and an annual half marathon every May.
Leeds is also home to The Ice Cube which is Europe's largest open
air ice skating rink.
Because Leeds is located in the heart of England it has the benefit
of superb transport links. The M1 motorway connects Leeds with
London while the M62 heads up to Hull and Liverpool.
The nearest main airport if Leeds Bradford International Airport.
The airport is regarded as one of the fastest growing airports in
the United Kingdom. The airport operate nearly 500 flights every
week to European and holiday resort destinations. Over the last five
years alone passenger numbers have increased by around 75%.
By rail, Leeds City station is a popular, and busy, train station.
Nearly 1000 trains pass through the station (and up to 50,000
travellers). Most major UK towns and cities can be reached by rail
from Leeds including London, Birmingham, Newcastle, Manchester,
Edinburgh and Liverpool. Leeds City Station is the largest railway
station outside of London.
