Lancaster Local Business Directory

Lancaster, in Lancashire, is a small city with a population approaching 50,000 people. Set along the River Lune, Lancaster has a strong commercial and cultural history. Lancaster is well known of its links to the British monarchy with several estates being owned by the Duchy of Lancaster (on behalf of Queen Elizabeth).

Some of Lancaster's key industries include textiles, paper, livestock, farm machinery and animal feed. Newer, high tech industries are developing fast in the area.

Commerce is still a key area of Lancaster's economy and the city has two major shopping centres; St Nicholas Arcades and Marketgate Shopping Centre. Both shopping centres have many popular high street stores and independent retailers. The city also has other retail parks on the edge of Lancaster.

Lancaster University is one of the most highly regarded universities in the county and is often in the top 20 UK university league tables.

The university is renowned for its business and management schools (the Lancaster University Management School is one of only two six star Management Schools in the United Kingdom).

Lancaster has several fine examples of Georgian architecture.
Lancaster Castle is one example of the well preserved architecture in Lancaster. The building is also used as a prison which has raised issues with locals who believe the castle should have better access as an ancient monument.

Other cultural landmarks include The Priory Church of St Mary and the Lancaster Grand Theatre. The Dukes Theatre (with its own cinema) is notable as a live venue.

Transport to Lancaster usually comes via the M6 motorway (and the connecting A6 road). By rail, the Lancaster Railway Station provides rail routes on the West Coast line.
