Jersey Local Business Directory

Jersey is a British Crown Dependency island located off the coast of Normandy. With a population over nearly 90,000 people, Jersey is a Bailiwick that includes several other uninhabited islands including Pierres de Lecq, Minquiers and Ercehous.

Jersey, along with Guernsey, make up an island of groups referred to as the Channel Islands. Although both islands are Crown Dependencies, they are regarded as the liability of the United Kingdom and are under their defence. Due to it's status, Jersey is not regarded as part of the United Kingdom or European Union (similar to the Isle of Man).

The political makeup of Jersey consists of over fifty elected members and several senators, constables and deputies. The existing States Members have all been elected as independents rather than relying on traditional political parties. The Jersey Democratic Alliance and Centre Party are exceptions to the rule (however, this was originally made up from independents).

Jersey is split in two twelve different parishes that are all named after the saints related to the parish churches. These include Saint Hellier, Saint Mary, Saint Peter, Saint Clement and Saint Lawrence. These days, the parish borders are mainly used for local and electoral administration purposes.

Jersey is quite large in terms of land mass and is the largest of the Channel Islands. The island measures 50 square miles and is just over 10 miles from Normandy. Much of the landscape is made up of cliffs to the north and sandy beaches and bays on the south.

Jersey is famous for its food produce. The island's milk, butter and cream are very rich and popular in many cooks repertoires. Jersey Royal Potatoes are another famous produce from Jersey. The potatoes (are variety of new potato) are usually prepared by simply boiling and serving with Jersey butter.

By air, Jersey can be reached using Jersey Airport. The airport operates flights to several United Kingdom destinations and handles around 1 and a half million passengers every year.

There are no railways in Jersey but local buses operate all around the island. An "explorer ticket" is available to visitors which allows for unlimited bus use around the island. There are also several popular cycle routes and lanes around the island.
