Ipswich is a
large town in Suffolk with a population of over 120,000 residents.
The town is surrounded by smaller borough boundaries which accounts
for around 15% of the total population.
In recent years Ipswich has seen large scale redevelopment programs,
especially around the waterfront area, that has turned a disused
dock into an up and coming residential area. The area also has a new
commercial centre that some locals oppose (notably the Ipswich
Society) who favour the traditional maritime heritage that the area
is known for.
The town is also the main hub for the new University Campus Suffolk.
This is the first university in Suffolk and enrolled its first
students in 2007. The plan is for Ipswich to eventually have a
thriving main campus in the town with several regional UCS Learning
Network Centres. The Ipswich Education Quarter is located on the
redeveloped Waterfront.
Ipswich is home to many popular artists who display their work at
any one of several local galleries. Some of the most popular
galleries including the Town Hall, Christchurch Mansion and Artists
Gallery (in Electric House).
Ipswich has several other cultural buildings including two museums
(the Ipswich Museum and the Ipswich Transport Museum) and several
dance studios. Ipswich also hosts several arts festivals, the most
notable one being held in Christchurch Park and often sees over 50
acts performing.
Ipswich has traditionally thrived on a strong agricultural industry
but in recent years the town has seen new industries contribute more
including the new developments around Wet Dock and Neptune Marina
that have seen boat and shipbuilders become increasingly important
to the town's industry and economy.
The town's most famous sporting team in Ipswich Town Football. The
team, who play at the Portman Road Station, play their football in
the Football League Championship and have a strong rivalry with
nearby Norwich City Football Club.
Transport links to Ipswich are quite diverse due to its close
location to the capital, London (just over 80 mile away). By road,
the M25 motorway makes the town easily accessible while the A14
links Ipswich to Cambridge and the Midlands.
Rail links to Ipswich are equally as good. The main station, Ipswich
Railway Station, is on the Great Eastern Main Line and has links to
Norwich and London Liverpool Street tube station. The nearest
international airport is Stansted (or the smaller Norwich
International Airport).
