Situated on the River Ness, Inverness is ideally located as a Scottish transport hub and is very famous for its sporting history and teams. Inverness has only been officially recognised as a city since 2001 (when it was previously classed as a town).

Today, many of the original and traditional Scottish industries in Inverness have been replaced by new high-tech businesses and companies.

In recent years Inverness based companies have become particularly well regarded and respected for their leading work in the design and production of diabetes diagnostic kits.

Sport has long been a popular event in Inverness and the city hosts the City of Inverness Highland Games. Two football clubs are based in the city, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, who play in the Scottish Premier League and Clachnacuddin F.C. who pay in the Highland League.

Inverness is located in the north of Scotland making transport links tricky for some locations. There is a railway station in Inverness that runs to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Perth.

In addition, some of these services connect to London and other major United Kingdom locations. The Caledonian Sleeper train runs an occasional direct route to London. Typically, there are 6 services running every week.

Inverness Airport is located approximately 10 miles outside the city and operates flights to several United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland destinations including Edinburgh, Manchester, Dublin, Belfast and London. There are also flights to the north and east Scottish Islands.
