Hereford, in the West Midlands, is a small city close to the Welsh border. Situated in the county of Herefordshire, the city lies on the River Wye and has a population of over 50,000 people.

The standout landmark in Hereford is the Hereford Cathedral. The cathedral dates back to the 11th century and is most notable for containing a medieval map of the world called the Mappa Mundi.

In addition to the spectacular cathedral, there are several other buildings on the grounds including the remains of the original Chapter House. Other buildings include The College, The Deanery and The Bishop's Palace.

Most of modern day Hereford's trading comes from rural and agricultural industries like cattle, beer, cider, poultry and leather. Many of the city's biggest employers are also based around these industries including Bulmers Cider, Sun Valley Foods and Painter brothers.

Hereford's most well known sports team is Hereford United Football Club. The team, who play at Edgar Street, currently play in Football League 2. Nicknamed The Bulls, the team are best known for their memorable defeat of Newcastle United in the 1972 FA Cup third round.

The city also has successful cricket and rugby teams (although these are not as famous as the football club) and the Hereford Rowing Club who practice on the River Wye.

Students in Hereford have the choice of five main colleges including the Hereford College of Technology, the Hereford College of Art and the Hereford Sixth Form College.

Although there is no university in Hereford (or Herefordshire) there are several popular universities close by to Hereford including Gloucestershire and Worcester.

There are several cultural festivals and events in Hereford including the Three Choirs Festival that can be dated back to 1719. The festival is one of the oldest music festivals in all of Europe and is held in alternate years with Gloucester and Worcester.
