Hackney Local Business Directory

Hackney, in east London, forms part of inner London and has a population of over 208,000 people. Hackney has a very diverse ethnic population which makes for a vibrant area of London. In recent years locals have should increased satisfaction levels with the borough and the council's performance. Crime too, which has often been associated with the borough, has decreased in the last few years.

The south of Hackney is adjacent to London City with many office developments in the area. Hoxten and Shoreditch are also just to the west of this area and are heavily associated with the arts scene in London. The Hoxton Square area is renowned for its bars, shops, cafes, clubs and restaurants.

In recent years housing developers have been building new developments and plots that sit side-by-side with the existing housing estates. Some of these developments are gated communities while other places keep the character of the inner-city.

To the east of the borough is the famous Hackney Marshes. The Hackney Marshes are an area of grassland on the bank of the River Lee. The marshes were drained in Medieval times but these days Hackney Marshes is best known for its use as Sunday League football pitches.

There are a total of 88 full size pitches on the marshes and on most Sundays over 100 matches will be played. Hackney will have a big role to play in the 2012 Olympics. An Olympic park is planned to be built on the Hackney Marshes.

To the north of Hackney are the boroughs of Stamford Hill, Stoke Newington and Clapton. Hackney has several listed buildings including the Tudor Sutton House. There are also several areas of Victorian and Georgian housing in the area.

Transport to Hackney is relatively extensive due to its London based location. Hackney Wick Railway Station, Stratford Station and Leyton Tube Station are all within walking distance in Hackney. An area of Hackney Wick has been reserved for Cycle access and there are canal routes through Hackney that can go as far as Hertfordshire.

It is not yet known what influence the 2012 Olympics will have on the cycle and footpaths as vast work is planned for the area in the run up to the summer games.
