The island of
Guernsey, in the English Channel has a population of nearly 70,000
people. Located off the coast of Normandy, Guernsey is a British
Crown Dependency that includes several smaller islets including
Sark, Alderney, Jethou, Brecqhou, Herm and Lihou.
The UK is responsible for the defence of the islands but Guernsey is
not actually part of the UK. Similarly to the Isle of Man it is
considered a separate possession of the Crown.
The Guernsey Cow is probably the most famous icon of the area and
Guernsey has long been associated with delicious milk that the
locals claim has health benefits over other breeds of cow.
One thing that stands out to visitors to Guernsey are the bright
blue letterboxes and telephone boxes. Apart from the colour
difference, they operate in the same ways as the red United Kingdom
letterboxes and telephone boxes.
The island is split in to 10 different parishes and, along with
Jersey, make up the Channel Islands. Much of the islands total
income is made up from financial services including insurance, fund
management and banking. In recent years, tourism has played a major
part in the islands income.
Guernsey use their own coins and banknotes but UK money is accepted
and freely interchangeable on the island. Many large companies have
their head quarters on the island including Specsavers Optical Group
and Healthspan.
Transport to and from Guernsey is mainly by air or sea. There are
two main ports on the island, St Peter Port and St Sampson's Port.
St Peter Port is also the capital of the island and has a population
of well over 16,000 people. The town is built up of many narrow
streets on steep hills.
The education system in Guernsey is mainly based on the UK's
National Curriculum GCSE and A Level system. There are several
schools on the island including Guernsey Grammar School, Elizabeth
College and the Ladies College. However, there are no established
universities on Guernsey.
The island has two commutable airports, Guernsey Airport and
Alderney Airport. Guernsey Airport is located on the island and has
recently opened a new terminal that can handle over 1 million
passengers every year. The airport divides its flights between
commercial flights and general aviation flights.
