Gateshead, in
Tyne and Wear, is a large town with a population of nearly 190,000
people. Based on the River Tyne, opposite Newcastle, the town forms
the urban core of Tyneside.
Gateshead is renowned for it's commerce and is home to the
MetroCentre. This shopping centre is the largest shopping centre in
the whole of the European Union. Located in Dunston, the shopping
centre has been open for over 20 years and has over 300 shops
occupying over 1.7 million square feet.
The MetroCentre is also next door to another retail park the has
large store based shops such as Asda, Toys 'R' Us and Ikea. As well
as the shops there are several hotels all located close to the town
centre.
The MetroCentre also houses Europe's largest indoor amusement park.
Named New Metroland, the park contains a roller coaster, pirate
ship, dodgem cars, Ferris Wheels and other rides. Also on site is a
multiplex cinema, bowling alley and laser gun arena.
Gateshead is also famous for it's architecture. The Gateshead
Millennium Bridge is perhaps the most recognised and won the James
Stirling Prize for Architecture soon after it has opened.
Since opening the bridge (that can pivot open to allow larger boats
underneath) has become a very popular tourist attraction and is
recognised and acclaimed for its aesthetic and physical beauty.
Other notable landmarks in Gateshead include The Angel of the North,
one of the largest landmarks in Britain. The sculpture measures 66
feet in height and 178 feet across the wingspan. Designed by artist
Antony Gormley, the sculpture looks over the A1 road into Tyneside.
Transport to Gateshead is accompanied by the Tyne and Wear Metro
which has several stations around the town at Gateshead Interchange,
Felling, Gateshead Stadium and Pelaw. Nearby main line train
services also run.
By road, Gateshead and Newcastle are very well linked so transport
links are very good. Rail links also run between the to locations
and there are plans for a cable car in the area in the future too.
Because of Newcastle's close proximity to Gateshead, the New
International Airport is a viable solution for local residents. The
airport flies over five million people every year and is one of the
fastest developing regional airports in the country.
