Located in Devon, on the south west coast of England, Exeter is a county town with a population of over 115,000 people. Based on the River Exe, Exeter has many steep hills surrounding it (historically the location of the town was originally chosen to help it defend itself from attack).

The area is known for being a beautiful and commanding place that is popular with visitors and there are several popular landmarks including the spectacular Exeter Cathedral.

During World War II, Exeter was bombed by the German Luftwaffe which saw much of the city flattened including historic buildings and the Cathedral of St Peter in the centre of the town.

Much of the city was rebuilt during the 1950's but the emphasis was to rebuild rather than restore historic buildings with many being demolished to make the redevelopment easier.

Today, the Princesshay are has been completely redeveloped with a brand new shopping centre. The development has caused a stir with locals due to its close proximity to the Cathedral. The new shopping centre houses over 60 stores over nearly 400,000 square feet of space.

Exeter Cathedral is the dominant landmark in the city. The Anglican cathedral was completed around the turn of the 15th century. The long ceiling, great clock and bishops throne set the cathedral apart.

Other areas of interest in Exeter include the Rougemont Castle ruins, The Guildhall, The Custom House and Northern Hay Gardens which are the oldest public gardens in England. They've been open open since the early 1600's and are still popular today.

Exeter has several museum and art galleries including the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, The Phoenix Arts Centre (along with the Phoenix Media Centre) and the Spacex art gallery.

Transport links to Exeter are quite extensive. By road, the M5 motorway is the most popular choice. The M4 to London can be accessed via the M5 making Exeter accessible from most parts of the country.

By rail, Exeter can be reached on the West of England Main Line. Exeter even has its own airport, Exeter International Airport. The airport operates scheduled flights in the UK and some international flights (including seasonal flights to Toronto in Canada).
