Enfield, in north
London, is an borough with a population of nearly 300,000 people.
Originally, Enfield was a small market town but has developed into a
residential suburb. The borough is part of outer London and is on
the north border of the city.
The borough was first formed in the mid 1960's and is made up of the
original Municipal Borough of Enfield, the Municipal Borough of
Edmonton and the Municipal Borough of Southgate.
Enfield is known for have the first ever ATM Cash Machine (at
Barclays Bank) and the first ever mass produced dish washer was
built in the borough at the old Hotpoint Enfield Plant.
The main town centre in Enfield has recently undergone extensive
redevelopment (known as the PalaceXchange) which has seen the areas
retail area extended with several new shops. The area has also seen
a new multi-story car park built to help with the extra traffic that
the centre will bring.
Edmonton Green is another area of Enfield that has seen extensive
redevelopment. As well as a brand new shopping centre, leisure
centre and supermarket there are ongoing developments with the
housing and civic features of the area.
The borough also has a large screen multiplex cinema, night clubs
and many other retail areas that can be accessed on the A10 road
that circles most of the area.
Enfield has several small sports teams and clubs that play and train
in the area. These include two football teams, Enfield Football Club
and Enfield Town Football Club, Saracens Rugby Club and Enfield
Cricket Club.
Transport to Enfield is good due to its location in London. Several
tube stations stop in the borough (Arnos Grove, Southgate, Oakwood
and Cockfosters).
Accessing Enfield by road is also convenient thanks to the location
of the A10 that serves much of the borough while the North Circular
Road and M25 are all in close proximity.
