Cork, in the
Republic of Ireland has a population of nearly 120,000 people making
it the third most populated city in Ireland. With the addition of
the suburban areas that make up Cork County the population grows to
380,000 people.
Often nicknamed "the Rebel County" or the "Real Capital of Ireland",
Cork is located in beautiful surroundings on the River Lee that
flows through the city and on to Cork Harbour. The harbour is one of
the biggest natural harbours in the world.
Because of the harbour and Cork's location the city is a major
seaport with many docks and quays. The main street in Cork (St
Patrick's Street) is well known for its architecture and is the main
shopping district of the area. Businesses and financial
establishments are mainly situated on the nearby Grand Parade.
The city features many beautiful examples of Georgian architecture
and is home to the tallest building in the Republic of Ireland (the
County Hall) and also the longest building (now converted to a
complex called Atkins Hall). The Shandon church tower is one of the
most famous and spectacular buildings in Cork. Other notable
landmarks include the City Hall, St Mary's Cathedral and the St
Finbarre's Cathedral.
The Cork Opera House is notable as it is one of only a handful of
modern opera houses in the country. Tourists also enjoy the grounds
of Fitzgerald's Park and the English Market. The covered market is
ideal for fish, meat, spices, luxury foods and fruit.
Cork is quite a multi-cultural city and has lots of things to do.
Theatre, music and film all play a important part. The Cork Film
Festival, Corcadorca Theatre Company, the Granary Theatre and the
Everyman Palace Theatre are all well known cultural destinations for
locals and visitors.
Transport links to Cork are very well catered for. Cork Airport
operates 50 flights a day and the airport is continually growing.
Cork Airport recently opened a second terminal to assist the demand.
Cork City has many bus services with local buses in the city
operated by Bus Eireann. Suburban buses operate in the surrounding
outer villages and towns. There are also long distance buses that
operate hourly services to Limerick, Galway and Shannon Airport.
