With a population
of just around 24,000 people, Chichester is a relatively small
cathedral city in the county of West Sussex. Chichester is one of
only six single civil parish areas to be given the status of a city
Chichester is a Roman town and the city housed the Roman Palace of
Fishbourne.
The city is believed to have been captured around the fifth century
and was the chief city of the Kingdom of Sussex. The city still has
the original cross shaped layout. These spread towards the medieval
market cross and the shopping streets to the north, south, east and
west.
Chichester still has many of the original city walls in place and
some parts can still be walked on. In around 80AD an amphitheatre
was believed to have been constructed but this is now buried under a
park.
Chichester Cathedral is a popular location for locals and tourists.
The cathedral contains a shrine to Saint Richard of Chichester and
is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The Cathedral needed
reconstruction work in the 19th century when the stone spire
collapsed.
Chichester has a vibrant theatre scene and is home to the Chichester
Festival Theatre. Each summer the theatre attracts many well known
and respected writers, directors and actors.
Chichester has several sports teams including the rugby club
Chichester R.F.C, Chichester City United and the Chichester Sharks
Flag American Football Club.
The Chichester Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1881, maintains the
classical music tradition of Chichester. The orchestra has both
professional and amateur players and they rehearse every week. The
orchestra usually play three concerts a year (including a summer
concert as part of the Chichester Festivities).
Major roads near Chichester include the A259 and the A27. Other
transport links include the Chichester railway station (that
operates on the West Coastway Line) and has links to London
Victoria, Gatwick Airport, Brighton and Basingstoke.
