Carlisle, in
Cumbria, is a large city with a population of over 70,000. Located
in North West England, the city of Carlisle acts an administrative
centre for Cumbria County Council.
Carlisle has a strong military history as a result of its position
at the Anglo-Scottish border. This made Carlisle an ideal stronghold
location. Carlisle Castle, originally built in 1092 has a colourful
history and was once a prison for Mary, Queen of Scots.
Carlisle was granted Fairtrade City status in 2005 and has a strong
industrial background. The city has many engineering works, textile
mills and food manufacturers during the early 20th century. A
century earlier saw a canal dug in Carlisle that connect Caldewgate
and Port Carlisle. The canal has since been filled in and is now
used as railway line.
Carlisle has a diverse range of sporting teams. Carlisle United FC
currently play in Coca-Cola Football League One and has, during its
history, played in all four English football divisions. The team
were Coca-Cola Football League Two champions in the 2005/2006
season.
Carlisle RLFC is a rugby league team (now merged with Barrow)
provides rugby entertainment to sports fans along with the city's
rugby union team. Carlisle also has strong historical links with
cricket, boxing and speedway sports.
The main transportation link to Carlisle is the M6 Motorway (to
southern destinations) and the M74 motorway towards Glasgow. There
are several important trunk roads that begin or terminate in
Carlisle. In fact, with the A6 and A7 Carlisle is the only city in
Great Britain (other than London and Edinburgh) with more than one
"single numbered A road".
Despite the number of roads in Carlisle, the city experiences
significant traffic problems at rush hours. There is a plan to build
a bypass road for west Cumbria (off the M6) which could help
alleviate the congestion.
Rail links to Carlisle are provided as the city is a principal
railway station on the West Coast main railway line. There are also
rail links to Newcastle, Leeds and Glasgow (via Dumfries). Carlisle
also has several local bus services (operated by Arriva and
Stagecoach).
