Cardiff is the
capital of Wales (and also the largest Welsh city) and has a
population of around 350,000 people. Cardiff is located on the south
east of Wales in the county of Glamorgan.
Cardiff is regarded as a major city in the United Kingdom, partly
because it is the home of the Welsh Government. Cardiff is also
regarded for its media sector and is now classed as the biggest
media area outside of London. Several popular television series are
filmed in Cardiff including Torchwood and Doctor Who. Other media
outlets such as radio have big bases in the city.
In recent years Cardiff has become one the quickest growing cities
in the whole of Northern Europe. Cardiff is also the biggest front
city in Europe.
Cardiff was original designated a city at the turn of the twentieth
century and in 1955 was proclaimed as the capital of Wales.
Cardiff has many famous buildings and landmarks. One of the most
impressive, and most recent additions in the Millennium Stadium. The
stadium (on the old Cardiff Arms Park site) is the national stadium
of Wales and is one of the largest capacity stadiums in the country
with 74,500 seats. The stadium is predominantly used for
international football and rugby matches but occasionally hosts
music concerts.
The Pierhead Building in Cardiff is a Grade 1 listed building and
hosts the National Assembly For Wales. It is one of Cardiff's most
familiar landmarks and was originally built in 1987.
Cardiff Castle is another famous landmark. It is a medieval castle
(and Victorian revival mansion) that was transformed from a Roman
fort. The castle is now a popular tourist attraction and also
features a regimental museum.
Cardiff is extremely popular as a cultural and educational city. The
National Museum Cardiff combines a museum and art gallery and is
part of the Edwardian civic complex. Cardiff University is a leading
university with a diverse student population (with 17% of students
from outside the United Kingdom). The University is highly rated and
was shortlisted for the Sunday Times University Of The Year in 2003.
There are currently over 30,000 students attending.
There is a large music scene in Cardiff and the city is home to the
Welsh National Opera and BBC National Orchestra of Wales. There are
also many shopping outlets in Cardiff with three main shopping
arcades (St. David's Centre, The Capitol Centre and Queen's Arcade).
The city has many large department stores and shopping arcades.
There are extensive transport links to Cardiff. The M4 motorway is
the main motorway and connects Cardiff with other welsh towns and
England. By Rain, Cardiff Central Railway Station is the biggest
Welsh railway station (and one of the busiest in the UK) with 7
platforms.
Cardiff International Airport is the only airport in Wales. It
provides both international and domestic flights. The airport is
located 10 miles outside Cardiff in the village of Rhoose.
