Belfast, the
capital of Northen Ireland, has a population of over 275,000 in the
main city and nearly 600,000 in the Metropolitan Area.
Situated near the eastern coast of Northern Ireland, Belfast is the
fifteenth largest city in the United Kingdom. Belfast is surrounded
by several hills (including Cavehill which is thought to have been
the inspiration for the novel, Gulliver's Travels) and is famous for
the Belfast Lough.
One of the latest tourists attractions in Belfast is the 'Belfast
Eye'. The big wheel offers stunning panoramic views of the city
inside one of the 42 capsules. The big wheel is located in the
grounds of the City Hall and reaches higher than the height of the
dome.
Belfast has an illustrious shipbuilding history (with Titanic being
the most famous export from Belfast) and in 1912, Harland and Wolff
had the largest shipyard in the world. Belfast also had the first
aircraft manufacturing company in the world.
Since the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 Belfast has seen very
prominent regeneration of the urban areas and city centre. Along
with this, Belfast is blessed with over forty public parks. In 1992,
the Forest of Belfast is a partnerships between local groups and the
government to manage the city's parks and open spaces.
Queens University of Belfast is one of the largest universities in
the UK with over 25,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The
university is spread over 250 buildings.
Students studying fine art and design have the benefit University of
Ulster which specialises in this field. Students, locals and
tourists can also enjoy fantastic cultural and arts activities in
Belfast with the Ulster Orchestra the only full-time symphony
orchestra in Northern Ireland.
Transport to and from Belfast is provided by The George Best Belfast
City Airport and Belfast International Airport. Black taxis are also
common in Belfast and the surrounding areas. The bus service and
rail public transport in Northern Ireland is operated by
subsidiaries of Translink.
Playing and watching sport has been an important past-time in
Belfast's history with a high percentage of the population regularly
playing a sport. Gaelic Football is the most popular sport and
Belfast alone has over 20 clubs dedicated to the sport.
George Best, the legendary footballer, was born in Belfast and
played for Northern Ireland. Over 100,000 lined the streets on the
day he was buried in the city.
