With a population of nearly 450,000 people, Edinburgh is a major European city and has nearly 5,000 listed buildings. Edinburgh has been the capital of Scotland since the 15th century and is the current sear for the Scottish Parliament.
The University of Edinburgh was founded in 1582. It is regarded as a prominent teaching and research centre and has nearly 25,000 students. The university is highly regarded and often features high up in The Times and Guardian university rankings.
One of most famous events in Edinburgh is the annual Edinburgh Festival. The festival culminates official and unofficial events over the period of around a month. The event attracts a huge number of visitors with the Edinburgh Fringe festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival and Edinburgh International Festival proving the most popular choices.
Each year, around 13 million tourists visit Edinburgh. Only London has more tourists in the United Kingdom. The main city is divided in to two main areas. To the south is the fantastic Edinburgh Castle and to the north is the New Town.
Edinburgh Castle is located on Castle Rock and is a dominating ancient fortress. The castle is Scotland's second most popular attraction for tourists. Many of the structures date back to before the 16th century with some are as old as the 9th century.
The castle is also the headquarters of the Royal Regiment of Scotland and houses the regimental museum for both the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and the Royal Scots.
In addition to the popular festivals in Edinburgh, the city also plays host to a famous Hogmanay celebration every year. This started off as a small scale street part on Prices Street and has grown to an event with 100,000 people attending each year.
Most of the night life in Edinburgh is based around Lothian Road, Rose Street, Grassmaket and the New Town area. There is a large number of pubs, restaurants and night clubs in the area and the New Town area is developing in to a popular and trendy location.
Edinburgh has an extensive bus network in the city and a tram network is in the planning stages. By air, visitors can travel to Edinburgh Airport which is just a few miles west of the city. The airport operates flights to Europe and some international long-haul destinations.
Traffic can become notoriously congested in peak times in some areas of the city. Several plans are in place to alleviate this including park and ride schemes, extra bus lanes and the proposed tram network.
