The most famous former resident of Sligo is W. B. Yeats who based many of his works around the town. Yeats spent most of his life in the town and is renowned for his "The Lake Isle of Innisfree" poem from the late 19th century.

Sligo is set amongst two different mountain ranges, the Ox Mountains and the Dartry Mountains which W. B. Yeats often wrote about.

In recent years Sligo town has undergone some development with two shopping centres (Quayside and Johnston's) opening in the last couple of years. Several members of the popular band Westlife were born or now live in Sligo.
