Historically, Wakefield is famous for being the setting for the Battle of Wakefield. The battle was part of the War of the Roses and took place around the nearby Sandal Castle. Today, the ruins of the castle are still visible.
One of the most famous landmarks in the city is Wakefield Cathedral. Built during the 14th and 15th century, the cathedral has a spire that is over 75 metres in height (the fourth tallest in England). The cathedral underwent major restoration in the 19th century with the stained glass windows redesigned by Charles Kempe.
Wakefield has had a varied economy over the years with cloth dealing and the textile industry making up the key industries in recent history. Mining also helped boost the industry with collieries based on the outside areas of the city.
In recent years, the city has incorporated the villages of Belle Vue, Sandal Magna and Agbrigg have become suburbs of Wakefield and several large council housing areas have been built. Along with the adjoining towns of Rothwell and Morley, Wakefield is famous for the production of rhubarb with the area often referred to as the Rhubarb Triangle.
There are several museums and galleries in Wakefield including the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the National Coal Mining Museum for England, the Wakefield Theatre Royal, the Opera House and a soon to be opened Barbara Hepworth gallery.
Several parks and open areas are available to visitors including Walton Hall (and nature reserve), Pugneys Country Park, Nostell Priory Stately Home and Thornes Park.
