These days, Truro is regarded as the main centre for administration in Cornwall as well as being a popular resort for leisure and retail. The most famous landmark in the city is the stunning Truro Cathedral.
The cathedral is relatively modern and was built in the 19th century in a Gothic Revival style. The cathedral has three separate spires which is rare amongst cathedrals in this country.
The cathedral is also the location for several other popular landmarks and buildings in Truro including the Hall for Cornwall, Cornwall's Courts of Justice, the Royal Cornwall Museum and the Old County Hall which is now classes as Grade II listed.
The other key feature of Truro is the large variety of shops available. In addition to a large selection of chain stores there are several markets and smaller, independent shops available.
The Pannier Market is a year-round indoor market that is popular with smaller retailers and businesses. The city's nightlife is becoming increasingly popular with several clubs, pubs and bars opening in recent years. During the day, Truro has a plethora of cafes, bistros and restaurants to tempt you with.
For culture lovers, the Royal Cornwall Museum displays renowned exhibitions about Cornish life, history and culture and has several collections of artwork.
There are many open spaces and park areas in Truro that make it a popular city break destination. The Daubuz Moors, Victoria Gardens and Boscawen Park are three popular examples. This theme continues with the Britain in Bloom competition that shows of the floral displays of the city every year.
Truro is very close to the A30 road which connects it to Penryn and Falmouth. The nearest motorway is the M5 (with Plymouth and Exeter in between).
The nearest airport is at Newquay (approximately 10 miles away) and serves most of Cornwall. The airport is rapidly growing and proves popular for passengers flying to London. The airport also operates flights the the Isles of Scilly and some European destinations.
