Stirling is medium sized city in Scotland with a population of just over 40,000 people. Set around an ancient fortress, Stirling has a rich history as a medieval town but these days the city is an area focused on higher education, retail and industry.
Stirling was originally created in the early 12th century by King David the First. Until he mid 1970's Stirling was a Royal burgh but was granted city status as part of Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee celebrations.
On of Stirling's most famous landmarks is Stirling Castle. Set amongst a volcanic crag on Castle Hill, the castle has a rich history as an important stronghold in Scotland. These days the castle is a national monument and is looked after the the Historic Scotland society.
Other historical landmarks in Stirling include the National Wallace Monument. The monument sits at the top of the Abbey Craig and was built to commemorate the Scottish hero, William Wallce. The monument was completed in the late 1860's.
Students in Stirling can study at the University of Stirling. The university has nearly 9,000 students attending and has been applauded for its work in the environment, culture, enterprise, society and economics fields.
Local bus services in Stirling, operated by First Group, operate services to Dunblane the the Bridge of Allan. The city also has links to Glasgow on the M80 motorway and Edinburgh on the M9 motorway.
There are several sporting teams in Stirling including Stirling Albion Football Club who play in the Scottish Football League. The tea, play at the 3,800 capacity Forthbank Stadium.
By rail, the Stirling Railway Station provides inter-city rail connections ad a planned Stirling - Alloa - Kincardine rail link will be opened soon.
