& Ripon Town GuideRipon is a relatively small city in North Yorkshire. Ripon is a historical cathedral city with a population of just over 15,000 people. The low population makes Ripon the fourth smallest English city.
The River Ure lies in Ripon and is set amongst several old style narrow roads. Despite this, the housing in the city is quite modern with a scattering of picturesque buildings that were built many years ago.
Ripon's most famous landmark is Ripon Cathedral. The cathedral dates back to the 7th century and is the seat of the Bishop of Ripon and Leeds and is one of the smallest cathedrals in the country. Despite its diminutive size, the cathedral is regarded as one of the tallest.
There are several other cultural and historical buildings in the city including the Bishop's Palace, the Town Hall and the St John the Baptist hospital.
Ripon was originally built around a 7th century monastery and grew around this. Throughout the city's history Ripon has also been a manufacturer of cloth in the 16th century.
The nearest university is York St John University. The university, with over 6,000 students, has seen several name changes and mergers throughout its history and was previously known as College of Ripon and York St John and York St John College of the University of Leeds.
Set amongst the rural and low population areas in Ripon is a large army camp on the outskirts of the main city. Much of the rest of Ripon is built around rural areas and upper middle class residents with much of the city owned by wealthy landowners.
Ripon does not have a railway station (but did used to be home to a busy station until late 1960's). Locals have campaigned for the line to return but no plans have been set in stone yet. The actual station still stands but is no surrounded by houses making restoring the railway a more difficult job.
