& Peterborough Town GuidePeterborough is a cathedral city in Cambridgeshire with a large population of over 160,000 people. Peterborough, which lies on the River Nene, is located just 75 miles from London and is famous for having a very flat landscape.
Peterborough borders Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Rutland. The main city centre is undergoing a £1 billion regeneration program along with the surrounding areas of the city.
The planned redevelopment of Peterborough city centre will take several years to complete with North Westgate a candidate for early work. Network Rail is also preparing developments for the area but debate is ongoing on how to combine these new developments whilst retaining the historic areas of the city.
Peterborough hosts several cultural events including the Peterborough Festival every year. Other cultural venues in the city include the Key Theatre which is located on the River Nene's embankment. The theatre specialises in a variety of entertainment shops and performances.
The most famous sporting team in Peterborough is the League Two football team, Peterborough United. The club, nicknamed The Posh, play their home games at London Road. Peterborough hold the record number of goals scored in a single season in 1961 when their team scored 134 goals.
Transport to Peterborough is quite extensive. The East Coast Main Line carries passengers by rail to London in just over three quarters of an hour. The railway line also runs servers to Lincoln, Birmingham, Ely, Stansted Airport and Cambridge.
By road, the A1 road is the most popular route in to Peterborough. This road connects Peterborough to London to the south and Edinburgh to the north.
Bus services in Peterborough are operated by several companies and has some of the fastest travel times for a city of its size.
