Old Market Square is a controversial recent development in Nottingham. The Square is surrounded by many shops and shopping streets and The Council House. The Council House contains a shopping centre and the Exchange Arcade.
Nottingham is famous for the legend of Robin Hood who, in the Middle Ages, was said the have lived in nearby Sherwood Forest. The forest covers much of Nottingham and Yorkshire (but, the legend associates Robin Hood with the county of Nottinghamshire). The modern day office of the Sheriff of Nottingham is now a formal position without command.
One of Nottingham's most famous landmarks is Nottingham Castle. The castle was one of the country's strongest strongholds in the Middle Ages and was founded by William The Conqueror. Unfortunately only some parts of the castle are still standing today.
There are two universities in Nottingham. The University of Nottingham has over 30,000 students and is much in demand for places. The other university is Nottingham Trent University that has over 20,000 students.
Nottingham has two main shopping areas and centres. The Victoria Centre has over 100 shops with flagship stores like House of Fraser and John Lewis. The other main shopping Centre is Broadmarsh Shopping Centre.
Broadmarsh Shopping Centre has over 80 shops at the moment but a planned redevelopment of the site (due to start in 2008) will see the number of shops rise to 300 including Marks and Spencer and Debenhams.
Nottingham is a popular tourists destination. The legend of Robin Hood is the main catalyst for this with landmarks like Nottingham Castle and Sherwood Forest popular visits for tourists. Other local tourist hot-spots include Lace Market, City of Caves and the Galleries of Justice.
Nottingham Forest Football Club is the city's most famous sporting team and play in Football League One. They have a famous history which culminated in former manager Brian Clough winning the European Cup twice in 1979 and 1980.
Nottingham is centrally located and has superb transport links. The M1 motorway is close to the city and the East Midlands Airport (which operate several low-cost international airline routes) is in commutable distance. The airport handles flights to several popular European destinations in addition to some trans-continental destinations.
