Newry Business Guide
& Newry Town Guide

Newry is the fourth largest city in Northern Ireland with a population of over 30,000 people. Newry is on the River Clanrye that flows through parts of the city and creates a border with neighbouring County Down and County Armagh.

Newry sits on a part of Northern Ireland known as the Gap of the North. Historically, Newry began as a popular market town and, in 2002, was awarded city status for the first time. Newry is famous for the rapid increase in house prices with prices rocketing by over 300% since the 1990's.

Situated between Belfast and Dublin, Newry has always been an important trade centre and has maintained a superb reputation throughout its history.

Several of Irelands oldest buildings are located in Newry including two of the oldest churches in the Republic and Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Cathedral of St Patrick, built in 1829, is perhaps Newry's most famous architectural achievement.

Newry also has an arts centre and museum. Several art galleries have also opened in recent years making Newry and increasingly popular tourist destination. The town hall in Newry has been built over the River Clanrye (on the county border).

Ireland's first Protestant church, St Patrick's Church of Ireland is in Newry and was built in 1578. The church overlooks Newry city centre. To the north is the striking Craigmore Viaduct that runs over the Northern Ireland Railways mainline track and is the tallest viaduct in Ireland.

Newry has several popular sporting teams and clubs including Newry City Football club who play at the Showgrounds stadium in the Irish Premier League. Other local teams include Newry Shamrocks GAC, Newry Bosco GFC and Newry Mitchel's GFC.

Transport links to Newry are very good due to it's location in between Belfast and Dublin. Newry Ireland Railway Station offers a service over the border on the main Belfast to Dublin line. By road the M1/A1 route, also from Belfast to Dublin, as the most popular route with an upgraded dual carriageway due to start in 2012.
