Middlesbrough is a large town with a population of over 140,000 people. Set in the Tees Valley, Middlesbrough became a unitary authority in 1996 when Cleveland was abolished. At the same time, Middlesbrough was entitled the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire.

Middlesbrough is almost exclusively urbanised and is the largest town (based on population and area) in Teesside. Despite this urbanisation, Middlesbrough is still on the edge of the North York Moors National Park.

To the east of Middlesbrough is Teesport which is the United Kingdom's second largest port. The port covers 2 square kilometres of land and sees over 6,000 ships pass through every year. A large amount of cargo is handled by the port with an estimated yearly amount over 50 million tonnes.

Middlesbrough has several famous landmarks including Acklam Hall, one of the oldest buildings in the town. Several churches including Coulby Newman, Marton, Stainton and St Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral are also in the area.

The Middlesbrough Institutes of Modern Art is a popular, and new, art gallery that opened in early 2007. The gallery is famous for housing one of the largest collections of Picasso's work in the United Kingdom. Other artists on display in the gallery include Damien Hirst and Andy Warhol.

Shopping in Middlesbrough is provided by several major shopping centres. The Mall Cleveland and the Dundas Street Shopping centres are two of the most popular but there is also the Hill Street Shopping Centre and the Captain Cook Square that house many national and independent retailers.

Despite the heavy urbanisation of Middlesbrough there are two popular recreational parks. The Stewart Park and Albert Park which have seem substantial restoration take place in recent years. The parks landmarks, sundial and fountains have all be restored completely or revived to their former glories.

Over 20,000 students study at the University of Teesside which has been open since the early 1990's. The university carries a wide range of subjects but is best known for its computer games design and computer animation courses.

The most well known sporting team in the town is Middlesbrough F.C. who play in the Premier League at the Riverside Stadium. The team won their first major trophy in their history in 2004 when they beat Bolton Wanderers in the Carling Cup final.

Transport to Middlesbrough is quite extensive. By air, the Durham Tees Valley Airport is in close proximity while there are several public transport options in the town itself. Multiple bus operators server the town providing transport locally and to the Durham Tees airport.
