& Lisburn Town GuideLisburn, in Northern Ireland, is a large city with a population approaching 75,00 people. Lisburn borders Belfast making it a popular location for commuters and residents.
Lisbrun was originally a borough of Northern Ireland until 2002 when it was promoted to city status. Lisburn is located in two counties, County Antrim and County Down. The River Lagan runs through the city and separates the county borders.
Despite having city status, much of Lisburn is surrounded by rural and semi rural neighbourhoods. The area includes Moira, Glenavy, Hillsborough, Dromara and Dunmurry.
Lisburn has extensive shopping facilities and outlets both in the main town centre and surrounding areas. The Sprucefield and Sprucefield Park is a large and popular out-of-town retail park containing companies JJB Sports, Boots, MFI and, most recently, Marks and Spencer.
Economically, Libsurn has strong historical links with the linen industry in Ireland. Since the late 1960's the city has been producing linen ware and there is now an Irish linen industry exhibition in the Market House building. The exhibition is currently free to enter for the public.
There are several colleges and sixth forms in Lisburn including the Laurelhill Communited College, St Patricks High School, Forthill College and the Lisbrun Institute which is a further education college.
There are several major transport links to and from Lisburn. By rail, the Lisburn Railway Station has been serving passengers for over 165 years and operates on the Northern Ireland Railways route.
Lisburn has several local bus services that run in the city centre. Several services run to the outer towns and villages. Most bus routes depart from the busy Smithfield area. There is also a direct route to Belfast that departs from the Linen Centre.
