During its history, Hull has operated as a market town and trading hub in addition to being a military port for supplies and a fishing centre. Hull suffered severe damage during World War II which saw most of the centre rebuilt after the war ended.
These days, Hull is known as being a very busy sea port which accounts for nearly 20% of the United Kingdom's imports. Several industrial companies have offices or bases in Hull including Seven Seas, British Petroleum and Smith & Nephew.
In recent years, Hull suffered particularly bad damage during the flooding in June 2007. As much as 20% of the city's housing experienced damage and 90 of the schools were affected. The estimated damage to just the schools is thought to be as much as £100 million.
Hull has excellent shopping options and houses three large shopping centres; Prince's Quay, The Prospect Centre and, most recently, St Stephens. These developments contain large brand name stores and many smaller chains and outlets.
The retail industry in Hull has grown by a large proportion in recent years which has culminated in The Quay West development that will see the Price's Quay shopping centre extended further with another 60 new shops planned for the area.
Students in the area can take advantage of the local university. The University of Hull (formed over 70 years ago) has well over 15,000 students attending it. The university has strong links with Hull York Medical School which is renowned for its work in training more doctors under a government backed scheme. The University of Lincoln also has a campus in Hull.
Transport links to Hull are very good. By road, the M62 motorway is the most popular route and links Hull with Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds. The motorway comes near to Hull and then joins the A63 dual carriageway that arrives in the city.
